Modern psychology has as little as possible to do with religion. Why, then, can religion hardly get enough of psychology?

For years modern psychology has ridiculed and neglected the spiritual. But many are now finding that psychology is unable to deal with some of the most crucial aspects of human experience: How do we resolve guilt? What should be done about persistent sinful behavior? How can we satisfy our longing for the holy?

Despite this, the church has heartily embraced psychology. Hundreds of sermons and books on topics like anger, self-esteem and parenting have popped up everywhere. And scores of churches have developed counseling services.

Has the church sold its birthright? Has it all too willingly given over its role in pastoral care to experts in the counseling professions? Can it put the soul back in psychology?
