África oh África! - Estas memórias foram escritas como resultado de duas sugestões, que me foram feitas de forma independente uma de outra, que deveríamos registar as nossas reminiscências dos cinquenta e dois anos em que fomos privilegiados por servirmos ao nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo na África central. A primeira sugestão não foi registada; mas quando, pouco tempo depois, foi repetida por um irmão no Senhor, ficamos constrangidos para aceitar a sugestão. Finalmente decidimos tentar por mãos à obra, e enquanto prosseguíamos recordando cada incidente ao longo dos anos, o nosso entusiasmo cresceu, e o livro continuou a crescer até que começamos a perguntar-nos quando iria parar! A escrita desta história deu-nos muito prazer enquanto recordávamos de novo a fidelidade de Deus ao longo dos anos. Embora tenhamos contado muitas coisas sobre nós mesmos, o nosso desejo ao publicar este livro agora é que ele seja usado pelo Senhor como testemunha da Sua maravilhosa obra, da Sua bondade infalível, e da realidade do Seu poder salvífico. A Ele seja a honra e a glória, agora e para sempre. Amen. 

These memoirs have been written as the result of two suggestions, which were made to me independently of each other, that we really ought to set down our reminiscences of the fifty-two years which we were privileged to serve our Lord Jesus Christ in central Africa. The first suggestion did not really "register" ; but when, shortly afterward, it was repeated by a brother in the Lord, we felt impressed to consider the suggestion. Finally we decided to try our hands at it, and as we proceeded, recalling incident after incident of the years now gone, our enthusiasm increased, and the book kept growing until we began to wonder where it would stop! The writing of this history has given us much pleasure as we have recalled again the faithfulness of God over the years. While we have had to recount many things concerning ourselves, our desire in sending the book forth now is that it may be used by the Lord as a witness to His wonderful working, His unfailing goodness, and the reality of His saving power. To Him be the honor and the glory, both now and evermore. Amen.
