The apostle Paul's letter to the citizens of Philipi presents us with a challenging model of whats's involved in golpel-centred city ministry. Paul urges the Philippians to imitate the mindset of himself, Timothy, Epaphroditus, and, supremely, the Lord Jesus - to put aside their own self-interest for the eternal salvation of others.
It was with this same gospel mindset that City businessmen initiated the City ministry of St. Helen's in the early 1960s. Over 20 businessmen prayed regurarly for a gospel platform in the Square Mile. The Revd R. C. Lucas was appointed by the patron of St Helen Bishopsgate, The Merchant Taylorr's Company, and instituted as Rector on Ascension Day 1961. Among many new initatives, the Tuesday lunchtime services soon became an institution with many hundreds attending. Under God, thir initiative has resulted in the good news of Jesus Christ being publicly proclaimed here in Bishopsgate since 1961.
