All the selections in this book were written by Lloyd C. Douglas. The great majority of them are sermons. A few are adresses given before groups other than church congregations. But wether he was in church or not, Dr. Douglas was speaking as a minister. (..) The fragments that follow some of the sermons are taken from prayers that Dr. Douglas wrote for his Sunday Services. In the thirty-two years that he was an active minister, Lloyd Douglas preached many hundreds of sermons that illuminated the Christian faith in a new way. We have chosen sermons and arranged them to give the highlights of Dr. Douglas' philosophy of life. In the first section, "The Christian Adventure", the sermons describe his ambitious view of what the church ought to be and do. In "The Bible Speaks to Us", he gives some modern applications of familiar Bible stories that for too long have been set aside as religious museum pieces, to be admired but not touched. The title of the third section, "How a Christian Lives", is self-explanatory. If people knew that, and acted accordingly, the rest would take care of itself. Dr. Douglas would have considered this the most important part of the book. (Publisher's Note)
