O Conhecimento do Santo - A verdadeira religião confronta a terra com o céu e olha para a eternidade como suporte do tempo. O mensageiro de Cristo, apesar de falar a partir de Deus, tem também que, como os Quakers costumavam dizer, "falar à condição" dos seus ouvintes; de outra maneira, falará uma linguagem conhecida apenas por ele mesmo. A sua mensagem deve ser, não apenas eterna, mas também oportuna. Ele tem que falar à sua própria geração. A mensagem deste livro não provém destes tempos mas é apropriada a eles. É chamada à frente por uma condição que tem existido na igreja há alguns anos e que está a tornar-se pior. Refiro-me à perda do conceito de majestade pela mente religiosa popular. A Igreja rendeu o seu antes elevado conceito de Deus e substitui-o por um tão baixo, tão ignóbil, que não é digno de homens pensadores e adoradores. Isto foi feito não de forma deliberada, mas pouco a pouco e sem o conhecimento da Igreja; e o seu desconhecimento apenas torna a situação cada vez mais trágica.  

True religion confronts earth with heaven and brings eternity to bear upon time. The messenger of Christ, though he speaks from God, must also, as the Quakers used to say, "speak to the condition" of his hearers; otherwise he will speak a language known only to himself. His message must be not only timeless but timely. He must speak to his own generation. The message of this book does not grow out of these times but it is appropriate to them. It is called forth by a condition which has existed in the Church for some years and is steadily gowing worse. I refer to the loss of the concept of majesty from the popular religious mind. The Church has surrendered her once lofty concept of God and has substituted for it one so low, so ignoble, as to be utterly unworthy of thinking, worshiping men. This she has done not deliberately, but little by little and without her knowledge; and her very unawareness only makes her situation all the more trajic.
