First published in 1953, Irving M. Copi's Introduction to Logic continues to be one of the most comprehensive introductory logic textbooks available. Written for introduction to logic courses, the text provides students with a variety of useful techniques for distinguishing good reasoning from bad and helps them to develop methods and habits of logical reasoning. The book offers students a means of improving their logical skills by presenting discussions of the forms and functions of language; theory of the syllogism; elementary symbolic logic including truth-functional and quantification theory; and inductive methods including analogy, generalization, hypothesis, and probability. For this eighth edition, Carl Cohen joins Irving Copi as co-author. They have worked together to make this new edition a more effective instrument for the study of logic. To this end, a number of changes have been made. Chapter 1 now includes materials on Deduction and Induction, and on Truth and Validity. In Chapter 3, the discussion of fallacies has been reorganized, and Chapter 4 on definition has been extensively revised. A new Chapter 15, Logic and the Law, has been added. Throughout the book, many new exercises, examples and illustrations drawn from a wide range of sources have been included.
