This history is intended for four purposes: To provide a suitable text-book for beginners in the study of musical history in schools, academies, etc.; to provide a text-book on musical history which may be employed by the private teacher of music with individual pupils or with small classes. The book demands no previous experience in the subject of musical history upon the part of the teacher; to provide music lovers of all ages with the story of musical history told authentically, clearly, entertainingly, and in a logical manner, so that anyone with the desire to get the essential outlines may do so with comparatively little effort; to provide the material needed for musical clubs studying the subject of musical history for the first time. The book is divided into forty story lessons. One chapter a week may be studied without adding more than a very slight amount of time to the student's work. The ten test questions found at the end of each chapter are of especial importance. Whether the student is studying the book in class or privately, these questions should be correctly answered. After completing. the work, the teacher will find it advantageous to make an examination by selecting one question at random from each group of ten.
In the cases of very young pupils, the teacher may readily make a suitable division of the work, so that the lessons shall include only those great masters to whom the most space and attention is given.
